David Bowie: The Final Act plot

In the 1990s, David Bowie, the creative genius behind hits like "Let's Dance," "Space Oddity," and "Life on Mars?", seemed completely past his prime. Critics vilified him, concert halls remained empty, and the man synonymous with innovation for decades seemed to have lost his magic. The chameleon of rock had run out of color. This documentary reveals how Bowie rose from that period and ultimately made one of the most remarkable comebacks in music history. Testimonies from close associates like producer Tony Visconti reveal the brilliant strategy behind his resurrection. He created his final album, "Blackstar" (2016), during intensive chemotherapy, with one goal: to create the best album of his life while facing death. A portrait of an artist who transformed his own mortality into art.

Despite the title, the documentary offers an overview of David Bowie's entire "career," not just the final phase when he was seriously ill and recorded the album Black Star. However, the documentary constantly jumps back and forth in time, which may be related to the central concept of Bowie as a musical space traveler who ultimately reaches as far as the black hole (the Black Star) into which he disappears, but in which time travel is also possible. I deliberately put "career" in quotation marks because the core of Bowie's work, or career, is that for him, his work had to be a form of rebellion that could lead to change. Bowie constantly sought out the avant-garde of his time, taking risks, and appropriating it, instead of pursuing a career (to make money) to which music had been reduced since the 1980s, and which he also briefly indulged in with his hit "Let's Dance," which made him a superstar and moonlighted for Pepsi Cola. The overview of his work shown is concise and summary, but the message is clear: Bowie was not just a pop star but an artist who constantly renewed himself and his music.
