Cry for Help plot
"What is causing the rise in teenage suicides, and what can be done to stop it."
Two years after the Virginia Tech shooting and a decade after the Colombine High massacre, documentary filmmakers are trying to find the source of the problem by examining topics such as depression and mental illness in teens. Every week in the US, an average of 28 teens commit suicide and 90% of these suicide victims have a diagnosable mental illness at the time of their death. Of course, not every teenager who suffers from depression prepares for a shooting, but the fact is that in depression, thoughts of murder and suicide are clearly present in all school shooters. Stacy Hollingsworth was a top student and musical talent who was always happy. But nobody, even Stacy's parents, didn't know that she was seriously suffering from depressive self-mutilation. It was a secret until Stacy, a freshman on the phone home from a psychiatric clinic on the university campus, that her parents realized something was seriously wrong. By telling Stacy's story, the filmmakers aim to highlight what parents might be able to do to spot early warning signs of depression and help their children live happy and meaningful lives.
