In the small villages and towns along the 'rio das mortes' (river of the dead) in Brazil's Minas Gerais, the landscape is permeated with memories of the days when gold miners sought their fortune here and wealthy Portuguese landowners tormented their slaves. Because the Portuguese, among the native population of Brazil, the Indians, found it difficult to find personnel for the gold mines and the farms, they took their black slaves from Africa. It was a hard time, with much poverty and oppression, and bloody revolts. Efforts were later made to erase the traces of this painful episode from Brazilian history, but the current population of the area has been passing on their stories and memories to their children for generations. In this documentary, director Samora shows the history through the stories of the villagers - descendants of slaves, farmers and prospectors.
