Ciudad de María plot
Hundreds of people crowd in front of Gladys Motta's house every day. They put an endless amount of letters with wishes through the gate. Gladys has visions of Mary, and brings one and a half million pilgrims a year to San Nicolás. This city, the birthplace of director Enrique Bellande, used to live from the steel industry. But after a recession, that economic engine was taken over by Gladys. Bellande interviews those directly involved and follows a journalist who reports on the events - only the enigmatic Gladys herself will not allow anyone to interview. Gradually the extent of the worship and the religious trade becomes clear. People travel for days and weeks on horseback, bicycle and on foot to pray here at a statue of the Virgin Mary. For convenience, only one sacred well has been invented. And a huge church is being built with pilgrim money.
