Bananas!* plot
Fredrik Gertten follows the American/Cuban lawyer Juan Domínguez who represents twelve workers of a Nicaraguan banana plantation in a unique lawsuit against their employer Dole Food. Their charge is infertility, caused by the pesticide DBCP with which Dole tried to protect his banana crop until 1982. Five years earlier, the drug had already been banned in the US because of demonstrably harmful effects. Dole was aware of this but has continued to expose his personnel to the risks outside the US borders. The case of the twelve workers is argued in court by Duane Miller. It's a classic David and Goliath situation. Only Goliath cannot be felled with one well-aimed stone. Dole's lawyer tries with great aplomb to incapacitate the twelve illiterate workers by portraying them as alcoholics and liars.
