Elle Marja is a 14-year-old Sami girl who raises reindeer. As she is exposed to the racial discrimination and racial research at her boarding school in the 1930s, she begins to dream about a different life. To achieve that, she must take on a different identity and break with her culture and family.

It's Lapps! Or rather: they are Saami. This is an interesting take on racism in the 1930s. Pseudo-scientists perform skull measurements in a reserve for the Saami, reflecting an outdated anthropological view. Elle-Marja wants to renounce her identity and become part of the supposedly superior Swedish culture. Painful is the way she is shown the door by people who don't even mean badly. In the framing story we see her as an elderly person after the death of her younger sister. Then she realizes that you can never completely shake off your heritage. The style is straightforward; the young, unknown actress expresses the urge to belong to something.

Well .... I thought it was a meager creature in terms of content. You get little or no answers for most of her life. I really thought that was a minus, especially considering the abrupt ending where you're like what I was actually looking at. Positive is the acting of the girl and the distant cold atmosphere that is created. 4/10

I had been looking forward to this movie for so long. Unfortunately I didn't see him when he was playing in the art house. I doubted too much. Would it be my thing? Now I bought the DVD and I don't regret it, because what a beautiful film! I think the setting in which it takes place is beautiful, convincing acting and a fascinating subject and story. I was not familiar with the Sami. I like that the film gives a glimpse into that culture. Impressive animals, the reindeer, and I think Lene Cecilia Sparrok is well cast for the lead role. It's nice that she really is a Sami and reindeer herder, and that her sister in the movie is also her sister in real life. Strong debut! 4*
