Bagheban plot
Makhmalbaf went to Israel with his son and cameraman Maysam to tell the already unusual story of the Bahá'í Faith, a special religion that began 170 years ago in Iran and now has 7 million followers. The religion was banned in Iran, after which it found a new home in Haifa, Israel. Gardens occupy a prominent position in religion. The creation and maintenance of these beautiful gardens are part of the spiritual ritual. All the holy places are surrounded by these gardens - they are the main location of the film. Indirectly, it is a story about the history of Iran, where an innocent 'gardener's faith' could not remain and where Makhmalbaf, once champion of the Islamic revolution, can no longer make his films.
