Architecton plot

Centered around a landscape project by Italian architect Michele De Lucchi, Viktor Kossakovsky uses the circle to reflect on the rise and fall of civilizations, capturing images from the temple ruins of Baalbek in Lebanon, dating back to 60 AD, to the recent destruction of cities in Turkey after a 7.8 magnitude earthquake. Rocks and stones connect the disparate societies, from ghostly monoliths stuck in the earth to tragic piles of concrete rubble waiting to be carted away and reused.

Kossakovsky's attempt to add a chapter to Godfrey Reggio's acclaimed Qatsi trilogy is a dull affair. It consists mainly of footage of old ruins, new (war) ruins and quarries filmed by an extremely slow-moving drone. There is also a sequence in which we are forced to watch stone being ground into gravel in slow motion and close-up. If you already know what you are looking at, the question quickly arises as to why you are watching it. And especially why you have to watch it for SO LONG. Architect Michele De Lucchi has a stone circle constructed on his estate and explains this further in the epilogue. And that's a good thing, because there is hardly any sense in it, no matter how beautiful some of the pictures are.

Houses blown to pieces, boulders pulverized into pebbles, shifting rocks, creaking rocks, large boulders, and the occasional explosion to jolt the viewer awake after they've fallen asleep. Despite the beautiful visuals, this isn't quite my cup of tea. I understand this is (also) a kind of indictment of humanity's overexploitation of the earth, but I'd still prefer a film with people instead of boulders.
