An Encounter with Simone Weil plot
How do we deal with the suffering of others? The French philosopher Simone Weil devoted her life to this moral issue, and then her death. Out of solidarity, she allowed herself no more food than the ration with which her compatriots in occupied France had to make do. She died in 1943 in Great Britain, at the age of 34. Filmmaker Julia Haslett is fascinated by Weil's ideas and career. She tries to get to the essence of Weil's thinking, hoping to find personal relief: Haslett's father committed suicide and her brother is also struggling with life. The film is a reverent tribute to the relatively unknown philosopher, but primarily functions as a chronicle of Haslett's own quest.
