American Jail plot
For the American director Roger Ross Williams (Life, Animated) prison was never far away in his youth. “As a young black man, I always felt there was a chance that whether or not I had committed a crime I would end up behind bars.” Determined to escape this fate, Roger left his hometown of Easton, Pennsylvania as a teenager to pursue his dream of a successful film career. He became the first African-American director to win an Oscar. Now, thirty years later, Roger is once again returning to his childhood friends. He is shocked and saddened to learn that nearly all of his former friends have been imprisoned or are still there. What follows is a cinematic journey, a confrontation with American conscience and at the same time a staggering critique of the system. Not only to the power and greed within this system, but also to the silence with which the real costs are ignored and deliberately concealed.
