Nice but not very special biographical crime film. The film manages to keep the viewer's attention but never really exciting or dramatic. The film focuses on the father-son relationship and above all seems to want to show that life is hard on the bottom - the father in particular remains very humanly hoping that this year will get better because he and his son are 'lions' but ultimately they have little control over their lives and are likely to get worse – with a critique of the justice system during the 'war on drugs' that punishes petty drug criminals disproportionately.

PS. On a positive note: despite what a black boy in the film says, that system doesn't seem all that racist.

Fairly entertaining, but not very exciting. White Boy Rick is based on a true story and of course it's a bizarre story that a 15-year-old boy is recruited by the FBI in the 1980s as an informant, where he has to buy and later sell drugs in a particularly unsafe neighborhood in Detroit. and thus put at great risk. And of course it's also bizarre that this same boy as a 17-year-old ends up behind bars for life for a nonviolent drug offense in which the same FBI drops him like a brick.

I thought the storyline was mediocre. The film ripples on, has few really dramatic highlights and therefore feels a bit on the long side. In addition, the film never really touched me. A plus is that the 80s come to life in this film.

True crime drama that never really gets off the ground. Richie Merritt is quite unsympathetic in the lead role and lacks the necessary charisma. Matthew McConaughey as his father has plenty of charisma, but his role seems oddly contrived and exaggerated. Add to that a script that excels in predictability and has nothing really special to say and you have a well-made but mediocre film.
