Johnny Varron (Jack Nicholson) is the leader of a gang that is constantly at loggerheads with the police. Dave, his best friend, has a girlfriend who Johnny says doesn't fit the gang. She is scared and therefore not suitable for Dave. When Dave wants his girlfriend back, Johnny tries his way to tell her what he wants.
