not an everyday manhunt.

The movie is a little weird in its build. An attempt is made to combine different genres and elements from crime films into a whole, something that does not quite come out well. Joon-ho Bong isn't quite sure where he wants to be with Memories of Murder. The first hour is not very interesting outside of that part with Kwang-ho. Then something in the movie changes and it gets more interesting by the minute.

It's going to be more than a standard manhunt. It will be an interesting character study of a number of police officers trying to solve a case and all the emotions that go with it. Especially nice to see how despair is taking over. The middle part is therefore a lot more interesting than the first part. The closer they seem to get to the truth, the more exciting it gets. And then the last half hour arrives. And what we get to see there is a masterly piece of cinema. It's also amazing how a film can recover in such an overwhelming way from its lesser moments, especially some slow moments and the playing time that seems to last for centuries. That scene in the rain and that fantastic ending, which takes place many years later, is brilliant.

Acting is very good. Kang-ho Song is completely in his role as always. But the rest of the cast also seems to have made the characters their own. Actually, I haven't seen anyone play really bad.

Visually it is beautiful. A lot of beautiful shots. Good lighting too. Editing is nice and tight and a lot of credits to the beautiful music.

An interesting viewing experience. Memories of Murder starts a bit muddled but ends in an unparalleled way.

Ultimately a stimulating film about prejudice, clashing characters and the effect of (in)justice. While watching this is mainly a Joon Ho-Bong title pur sang: the tone changes constantly. The beautiful cinematography during (for example) the first scene in the field gives Memories of Murder a classic and serene look at times, but there are also moments of Korean slapstick and inimitable black comedy scenes (police and dropkicks, alternative interrogations). In the end it fluctuated too much for me to be one hundred percent with the low drama, or the suspense towards the final sequence(s), but this is still the best work I've done so far (besides Okja, Snowpiercer) from Bong saw.
