Every ten years I check it again to see if the stars are still shining. And they do, with Ingrid Bergman and Wendy Hiller in particular making the most of their limited options, with the unrecognizable Albert Finney dominating the events appropriately. But the film itself doesn't get any tighter, more exciting or better, and that filter to suggest a 1930s atmosphere remains a source of annoyance.

The first in a series of large-scale adaptations of Agatha Christie detectives with an impressive star cast, Ingrid Bergman earned her third Oscar (after Gaslight and Anastacia), but the Oscar nominee Albert Finney dominates as the eccentric, self-righteous Hercule Poirot who turns out to be the louse in the fur during a train journey on the Orient Express when Ratchett [Richard Widmark] is found dead in his cab. Balsam is the owner of the railway who realizes that only Poirot's genius mind can unravel this mystery. Poirot then interrogates all the passengers (including Lauren Bacall, Anthony Perkins, John Gielgud, Sean Connery and Vanessa Redgrave) before solving the mystery in his well-known elaborate, fiery closing argument. Excellent acting and intriguing.
