This movie completely ruined my mood When I started, I was completely in a vacation mood, and by the end, I was on the verge of depression. But it's a very good film, beautifully acted (it's amazing how hard you can make a film by simply not showing any emotion; I found it almost unbearable at times). The script is very messy, which is clearly intentional, but I did find it a bit distracting. But no complaints, 4 stars.

Robert Bresson was the king of omission. In his films, little to nothing seems to happen, but when you consider the sometimes gruesome missing images, the picture changes completely. "L'Argent," from 1983, was his farewell film and is perhaps his most minimalist work. The theme is, in French, "Money is the root of all evil." The amoral final scenes, in particular, will haunt you long after.

The least you can say about L'Argent is that it's an intriguing film. With only Pickpocket and A Man Escaped (both rated 3* by me), I haven't seen much of Bresson's work yet, but the style of this film is very interesting. I also don't really recall those two films having a similar style, so a rewatch might be in order.

What immediately stands out is the emotionless acting. I don't think I've ever seen a film where there's less emotion on display, but in a way, it works. Bresson thus focuses primarily on all the events unfolding, as we see quite a few criminal acts (counterfeiting scams, the shop assistant who cheats on prices, murders, etc.).

And it's also the way Bresson records all these events. We see a lot of close-ups of certain actions, such as hands being transferred. In a way, it's fascinating to watch it all.

A remarkable film by Bresson. Certainly not a feel-good film, as Bresson paints a very negative picture of humanity, but what he presents is nonetheless captivating.

3.5*
