Klute is often referred to as a part of the Paranoia trilogy (along with Parrallex View and All The President's Men). The sexual revolution and the colorful flower power had given way to a permanent feeling of unease. "All You Need is Love" was no longer sung for the crazy Vietnam veterans, Watergate had yet to be discovered, and the Club of Rome had just about predicted the end of the world. That sense of a certain misery, Camus-esque alienation lurks in every dark apartment building in Klute. In every customer who gets the whore Bree over the floor. From the man who whispers a delicate sexual fantasy in her ear, to the old man who has a fantasized conversation with his deceased wife from behind his desk. Alan J. Pakula has a unique style. I can't quite put my finger on what that means, but he's never made the ringing of a telephone sound so ominous.

Jane Fonda. Don't shoot me, but apparently I have big holes in my movie history. I had always imagined her as a somewhat blond bimbo, who could laugh a bit sweetly (nice role in Cat Ballou), but I had no idea that she could act as well. 2x Oscar winner even. Apparently she's still alive. I know that's swearing in church, but I had absolutely no idea about this. Forgive me, her role in Klute is fantastic. Like Deneuve in Belle de Jour, she takes the role of a prostitute very seriously. Particularly painful when she is telling her story to the psychiatrist. The tears and the heap of snot bubbles in the final scene were not scripted, by the way.

I mainly knew Jane Fonda from light-hearted roles such as Barbarella or Cat Ballou, where she played a counterpart to European sex symbols such as Brigitte Bardot, Anna Karina or Claudia Cardinale. She is still largely in Klute, but she shows that she can also act well. She carries the film so well that I wondered why the film was named after her opponent and not after her.

Klute is a neo-film noir that can create a good atmosphere and tells a fascinating story. And brought to the early 1970s, it's not a parody of the film noirs of the 50s. Only the 2nd film from director Alan J. Pakula who previously produced films like To Kill a Mockingbird. As a director, he would certainly do as well with titles like All the President's Men and Sophie's Choice. The film is especially beautiful to watch with some wonderful shots, wrapped in the typical 70's colors with a warm glow over it. Cinematographer Gordon Willis worked on The Godfather a year later (he worked on the entire trilogy), as well as the Woody Allen films Annie and Manhattan. Top talent behind this Klute which is clearly visible. The combination of a captivating film, well made and above all a strong and attractive Jane Fonda, make this film a little gem.

Meh, expected more. In terms of atmosphere, decoration, locations and camera work, you are in the right place with this film. Playing with silhouettes and sets is performed well here, which, together with the music present, provide the necessary tension. Also positive are a few powerful atmospheric shots such as the moments in the elevator, the scene where Fonda enters a studio to play a part for an old man, the scene where Peter looks outside from his office and gives the camera a full picture. of the skyscraper, the scene in the disco where she ends up in the arms of her pimp and the final confrontation in the studio. Lots of focus on the characters, especially Fonda and not so much Sutherland as Klute. As a result, it is also built up long-winded where the plot comes across rather mediocre and given the fact that you quickly realize who is behind it, the story also has little tension to offer. 6/10
