Internal Affairs plot

"Trust him... he's a cop."

The Internal Affairs Department deals with police corruption. Newcomer Ramon Avila is immediately given a difficult assignment: he and his partner must investigate the business of Van Stretch, an old school friend from the police academy. Through him, Avila comes into contact with Dennis Peck, an at first sight honest agent. Appearances can be deceiving, however, because he has connections in the underworld. Obsessed with Peck, Avila fights him fiercely.

Possibly Richard Gere's best role. It seems easier for him to play questionable characters than good guys (which he does too much for me). Also think of American Gigolo; also a great part from him. This movie is one of the darkest police movies before Training Day came on the scene. Andy Garcia is fine as a hothead Internal Affairs inspector who wants to make short work of LAPD practices that can't stand the light of day. Also a story actually about self-destructive characters, whether that's because of snorting cocaine or because you go down that path that is essentially a sliding scale: from corruption to murder on order. Unusually dark ending for Hollywood.

Fairly mediocre thriller that seemed believable to me at few moments. Never really got into the movie so I lost touch with the plot and characters. A film at a leisurely pace, monotonous, superficial and full of clichés. If I would rather recommend a similar plot around corruption within the police force, I would rather end up with, for example, Serpico by Al Pacino.

It starts with the characters. Never been a super fan of Gere, but in this movie I don't see him functioning as a bad guy. The psychopathic part didn't do much for me. Garcia was slightly better, but didn't really convince me either. Also too little content. Have seen better and more exciting police thrillers. Unfortunately.

Mediocre.

The Richard Gere and Andy Garcia combo isn't exactly one that gets me excited. Certainly Gere is often a salt bag. In this film he is allowed to play an ambiguous character at first sight, but he does not really shine. Not only because of his lack of acting talent, but also because of the script. After all, that gives him few unpredictable scenes. The film settles down very quickly and there is little room for some doubts here and there. In terms of atmosphere setting and also audiovisually, exactly what you can expect from thrillers from that period, which makes for an unsurprising film. I would say: good as a snack, but there are actually better films for that.

2.5
