Subgenre & subplots.

Not all subplots are equally strong, but overall this is a decent prison drama. Redford is not out of place, but stands out sharply against all the flat cliché types that pass in review. Yet this is not a crazy looker and within the subgenre a decent classic.

Good.

Robert Redford walks unshaven in this prison drama. It is an indictment of abuses in an Arkansas prison in the 1960s, based on true facts. Brubaker (actually Thomas Murton) goes to war against corruption, abuse and other things that should not see the light of day. Unlike politician Lillian (Jane Alexander), he is unwilling to compromise. Some prisoners have the status of trusty, a kind of authority. The corrupt system goes from bottom to top, right down to the governor.

Redford plays with energy and charisma. Yaphet Kotto has the most beautiful side role as one of the prisoners. When he is tortured in the beginning, we get to see little of the violence, but we do get a close-up of Brubaker's shocked reaction. Morgan Freeman plays a confused inmate who comes out of solitary confinement. I think I have seen him as a prisoner before, but that must have been in something less well-known.

A man with a purpose, a conflict with the authorities, grim reality, passionate actors... It is enough to hold your attention for two hours.

Entertaining film that is said to have been inspired by true facts.

A sum of all the abuses committed in prison leads you to crime, corruption within the prison walls but also far beyond, to a higher level. Film is therefore essentially a strong indictment of all those facts.

Robert Redford was perfect in the role of go-getter and reformer with a sense of correctness, which surprisingly, from the corner where support should have come, was not accepted.

A well-designed drama that was rightfully nominated for an Oscar, exactly for the script.
