Strange case in the western genre, and that's what makes it a good western. The comparison with Forrest Gump is quite justified, with the somewhat dorky Jack Crabb unwittingly being part of and influencing historical events. Meanwhile he is tossed like a plaything of fate from the Indians to a quack, again to the Indians and so on. Not such an impressive role for Hoffman, compared to other of his works. No, I was more taken by the beautiful photography and the strikingly anti-American side the film chose, especially since Custer is not portrayed as a military genius at all.

In addition, the more humorous moments were a bit disappointing for me (that gay indian) and formed an unusual contrast with some more tragic scenes. So I agree with the people who call it rock solid but not top notch. Just like its congener Forrest Gump, it is wonderfully entertaining.

Although our civilization and the Christian faith are more than once seriously wiped out and although the film makes it clear that the Indians and not the aggressor from the civilized world had the most right to the title of "human being", there is In this particular western, there is so much light-hearted mischievous humor, funny satirical stuff and parody of the serious, heroic western that you can hardly see the entire film as just drama. It's an outdoor western series skilfully put together by Penn in such a way that it remains captivating until the very end.

Dustin Hoffman is of course excellent in his role of actually puny, insignificant little man who keeps slipping through the cracks.

His spooky appearance sometimes reminded me of his role in "Midnight Cowboy".

Handsome movie.
