Gangster Squad plot

"No Names. No Badges. No Mercy."

Los Angeles, 1949. The ruthless mob king Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn) rules the city, enriching himself with income from drugs, guns, prostitution and – if possible – any bet made west of Chicago. And he does all this thanks to the protection of not only his own crew, but also the police and the politicians he keeps under his thumb. He deters even the bravest and toughest of police officers, except for a small secretive division of the LAPD that, led by Sgt. John O'Mara (Josh Brolin) and Jerry Wooters (Ryan Gosling), join forces to bring Cohen down.

Gangster film about the demise of mob boss Mickey Cohen in the 1950s. Inspired by true events according to the opening credits, but the filmmakers don't pay much attention to what really happened at the time. Moreover, they forgot to make the film exciting in spite of a lot of excessive violence. All in all, mediocre in many respects, which I think the true fans of the genre hardly enjoy.

“It's not paradise, but it is the city of angels.”

Rock hard, atmospheric and sometimes even humorous mafia film. The interplay between the actors is strong and visually the stylish 1940s really come to life. A lot of blood flows and it rains bullets, so it is also nice if the actors ensure that you as a viewer are dragged into the story.

Penn, Brolin, Gosling, Stone, Patrick etc. They all have enough talent and charisma to excel in this kind of film. And a story about a colorful group of cops taking on mob boss Mickey Cohen is always interesting to watch. With lots of explicit shooting and brawls. With the last part around a hotel as the highlight.

Pretty okay.

The story doesn't have much going for it. The group of off-the-grid police officers are going to put a stop to an up-and-coming criminal. This results in a number of typical crime and action scenes, many of these films have already been made.

Fortunately, Fleischer manages to throw some of his usual panache into the film, without really changing the atmosphere completely. It's still that grim but also romantic crime scene, only a little more creamy.

The actors are also cleverly chosen. No surprising choices or roles that really stand out, but just good people in the right place. The film may be a bit on the long side, but it never gets boring or boring. A nice snack in other words.

3.0*
