A nice film noir with a nice British atmosphere. The acting is solid, sometimes a bit over the top, but I especially found the role of Hermione Baddeley quite strong. In appearance she is very reminiscent of Gena Rowlands and also in way of talking.

I especially missed any kind of tension, which sometimes causes Brighton Rock to drop a bit in terms of level. That is also because there is often a lot of dialogue, which does not always lead to anything and sometimes even seems to be about nothing at all. Fortunately, it is all very entertaining and the strong atmosphere makes up for a lot.

Brighton Rock is certainly not a punishment to watch for fans of the genre. Far from bad, but certainly not the best either. Enough on my part, so this time.

Good film about the young leader of a criminal gang in Brighton Rock. An excellent and quite exciting opening. The film does not manage to maintain this level for the entire length, but there are still plenty of good scenes in it. Beautifully captured here and there with tight camera work. Richard Attenborough is unexpectedly well cast and makes a great impression with his penetrating gaze.

Gangster sagas were already popular in the US in the 1930s, but in Britain this was a new genre. The high English of the theater had to make way for Cockney and crooked language. Graham Greene's title refers to a type of candy on which the name Brighton remains legible. It comes to a clash between the criminal environment and the cheerful holidaymakers in this coastal city.

Richard Attenborough, then without white hair and beard, plays the role of Pinkie. He is small as a little finger, but tries to appear taller with tough demeanor, grown-up clothes and brilliantine in his hair. Instead of letting things take their course, he responds with exaggerated paranoia and aggression. Halfway through his face gets injured, making him think of Scarface. He is afraid of ending up in hell later.

Rose is naive and innocent as a rose, but happens to get caught up in the plot. She is Catholic through and through. The ending, different from the book, seems like a divine intervention in the form of a scratch on a gramophone record. Other important characters are the victim Fred; and Ida, who takes on the role of an amateur sleuth.

When introducing Pinkie, you only get to see his hands, which make a close-up strangling motion. A dramatic highlight is the murder of Spicer, with that rotten balustrade. Rain, shadow and mirrors reinforce the gray atmosphere. A hidden camera was used for some street scenes, so that unsuspecting passers-by come into view. The beach, the pier and the horse racing track have been optimally used. A ride through a fairground tunnel will never be the same again.
