Wristcutters: A Love Story plot

"Life is a trip, but the afterlife is one hell of a ride"

After Zia commits suicide by slitting his wrists, he ends up in the afterlife. However, it seems much the same place as it is on Earth - just less pleasant and comfortable. In this new world he only encounters other suicide bombers, such as a Russian musician named Eugene and his parents and younger brother. When Zia learns that his loved one who has been left behind has also committed suicide, he and Eugene set out in a wrecked car (yet with special features) in search of her. Along the way they pick up the beautiful young woman Mikal; she is looking for 'those who are in charge', because she has a complaint.

I expected a cutscene, but even that status was not saved. The idea is nice and it's still starting to bite. After that it becomes a road trip without a line, with a lot of predictability. The story rattles on all sides, even if you go along with the train of thought. The film remains too superficial and refuses to choose between a drama or an absurdist comedy, thus succeeding in neither.

The protagonist is reminiscent of a young Ewan McGregor. The only moment of real grin was the mini-train.

Gosh, are you already not happy in the ordinary world and have you sought redemption from the worldly misery by committing suicide, then you are confronted even harder with your unhappiness because you end up in a world that is very similar to ours, but where everything exists in devalued form. Surviving under lower quality conditions. How absurd can it be.

Very absurd. There is no visible joy in this film. The characters walk around disconsolately. They're stuck. They are desperate, they are indifferent and they are actually still unhappy. They are unable to laugh. Now there's no reason for that either, but they can't even agree. The world looks joyless. Gray and grey. Everything looks used. There is wear on everything. The combination hopelessly unhappy and devalued world, where happiness does not exist, is funny. Not haha funny, but more subcutaneously funny. Amusingly funny.

The film tells the story of a search for something. Every character is looking for something. One is looking for a loved one or a reason for being. Another is looking for a way to exist or simply a way out. And everyone does it in a seemingly stoic way. Laissez faire. It comes as it comes. Underneath all that apparentness, however, there is a solid dose of (despair) hope, which has a comical effect.

A road trip through this gloom yields fun and quirky encounters. All are bizarre. No meeting is ordinary. No character is ordinary. That's laughable. That's funny.

I enjoyed this surreal experience. Enjoyed the fantastic dialogues. Enjoyed the absurd storyline. Enjoyed the characters. Enjoyed everything really.
