White Men Can't Jump plot

"It ain't easy being this good."

Scam artist Billy (Woody Harrelson) is on the run from his creditors and ends up in the Venice neighborhood of Los Angeles. To earn some extra money, he challenges one of them to a duel for money on a field where a group of black boys are playing basketball. Sidney (Wesley Snipes) takes up the challenge, because how would such a gangly white man know anything about basketball? When Sidney is crushed in front of his friends, he realizes that he and Bill could make a lot of money by betting. This would also work out well for him, because Sidney could use some money. But what Sidney doesn't know is that Billy is in debt to two mobsters who will soon be demanding their money.

“Billy, listen to me. White men can't jump.”

Nice movie. White Men Can't Jump is most fun when Snipes and Harrelson are sparring both verbally and on the basketball court. At some point, the film drags on a bit, but it remains entertaining. Rosie Perez is mostly annoying in the beginning, but in the end she gets on her feet. The basketball scenes and sunny Los Angeles create a pleasant atmosphere. Not a high flyer but quite entertaining.

"Even the sun shines on a dog's ass some days."

Nice movie indeed, with a nice Snipes in particular, Harrelson's rendition was too boring for me. Busty Rosie Perez is sexy and wonderfully raunchy, but that Puerto Rican accent is a bit too heavy for me. Enough entertainment and finds in the plot, with the necessary scam tricks. A lot of "yo mamma" jokes that get boring after a while. I also found it unbelievable that Snipes would bet his car just to help Harrelson. Guilt?

I used to think this was the best basketball movie. I watched some of the others back then, Heaven Is A Playground, Blue Chips...but now it's definitely Love And Basketball that rises above the others, including this one.

hmm.

A somewhat unusual snapshot and narration of two gentlemen who, at first sight, don't seem to fit together at all. With the special title that the film bears, director Shelton immediately makes it clear that he knows that all too well himself. Then we get a film that plays more on the humor than on the drama side of the neighborhood.

Problem is, there's also romance involved, which is quite a drag on the story. I can partly forgive the fact that the characters are absolutely not sympathetic due to the hysterical roles they play, but not the whining that comes with the romance. Ultimately, the film is also more of a crime film than a comedy, and then it is a lot harder to get through.

Fortunately, Harrelson and Snipes are good in their roles. That can be said to a lesser extent about Perez, who is especially annoying. Also as a character just difficult to look at. Looks like a 12 year old in a woman's body, very annoying. Fortunately, this is partly compensated by Harrelson and Snipes who certainly have the necessary chemistry on the sports field itself.

In the end, due to its loud character, the film still looks pretty good, but the feeling that the film wants to be more than it needs to be is strong. The film is at its most enjoyable with the hysterical comedy and characters that taunt each other, and less as a crime film with serious subjects and background issues. As soon as the second takes over the film, it is stiff, but that does not alter the fact that the first half of the film looks pretty good.
