Jean is a young sailor who has a correspondence with the Marquise de Botarin whom he has never seen. One day he asks for her picture. Instead of her own photo, she sends a photo of her niece. The young man is impressed and decides to travel to the province to meet her. But that leads to a whole host of misunderstandings.
