25-year-old heiress Joan Butterfield manages to escape from her overprotective grandfather Cyrus W. Butterfield. However, Joan has no money with him. On the streets of New York, Joan befriends shop girl Peggy O'Brien. Peggy takes care of Joan and arranges a job for her at a store, which turns out to be part of a chain of stores that Joan would inherit. However, Joan does not know that her true identity is known to journalist Bill Spencer.
