This Land Is Mine plot

Albert Lory is a schoolmaster in occupied territory during the Second World War who - like all other villagers - gets a pamphlet from the resistance under his door. He still lives with his mother and she orders him to burn it, but he decides to keep it later. When the resistance then turns to violence, the enemy counterattacks by rounding up a number of villagers. It is becoming increasingly difficult for Albert to keep aloof; not that he wants to, but his fear takes over. A confluence of circumstances and intrigue between a number of those involved push things further to a head...

"Somewhere in Europ", the film mentions at the beginning, but it is clear that the story is set in France but that the filmmaker applies the ideas expressed to every country that was under German occupation when the film was made (1943). sorrow.

Those ideas that prioritize resistance to the occupier, patriotism and preservation of one's own nature are explained by an excellent Charles Laughton who shines as both the cowardly teacher and the strong advocate, in a film that becomes stronger and stronger towards the end and that perhaps the publication was a solid popular success and can still be enjoyed now, in its sober black and white.

In addition to Laughton, a very young Maureen O'Hara and certainly George Sanders are also good in their roles, while the figure of the mother comes across as overacted and almost grotesque.

The devil is really in the tail. Charles Laughton's speech towards the end about freedom and oppression lifts this patriotic film to a good level, after a rather weak first part. That doesn't change the fact that things just don't click between me and Renoir as a director. Must be just me.

A bit of a naive film if you consider that the Germans would never allow such a monologue in court.

But let's put that aside for a moment, then what remains is quite a reasonable film, Lory's character switch may be a bit extreme, but we'll take that for granted, a somewhat unusual occupation film but certainly not bad.
