“All memory of the brilliance of the young Tenenbaums had been erased by two decades of betrayal, failure and disaster.”

I'm starting to become a fan of Wes Anderson. The man has an interesting and idiosyncratic vision and directing style, and The Royal Tenenbaums has once again become a colourful, absurd and energetic film with strange characters, bone-dry humor and delightful dialogues. Light-hearted entertainment and dramatic developments fight for priority and that is a balancing act that is difficult to sustain.

Still, Anderson succeeds for the most part (only at the end it goes a bit wrong). This is my kind of humor and the actors are also perfectly cast. I want to mention Paltrow special because it's amazing how she's completely absorbed in her role. I also enjoyed audiovisually and Anderson has again managed to create a beautiful world. The man has an amazing fantasy and knows how to translate it well to the silver screen.

Quite fun.

However, if you know what Anderson is capable of (Grand Budapest Hotel), it is a minor setback. He is clearly still searching here, although the ingredients are already there. Strange characters, bright colors and dry humor. It all looks great, but the genius is missing. Some scenes are not always exciting, and the Owen Wilson character is rather annoying.

Cool.

Very nicely shot film, that's for sure. Where I still find Rushmore a bit Wes Anderson light, that is no longer the case for The Royal Tenenbaums. Very colorful affair. Almost pleasantly portrayed, with a lot of stylization, details, contrasts. I like Anderson's fairytale (audiovisual) style.

In terms of content, that is sometimes a different story. Somehow that makes sense. The Tenenbaums are also a fool together. The balancing act between chaos and modest tragicomedy is not always obvious. Anderson manages to keep that balance quite well, although the drama clearly takes the upper hand in the last half hour. Not that that's a bad thing. That too is simply well done. Here and there some mistakes are made, often those are characters that I find a bit too irritating or not funny. In this case, it's Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson.
