The American Way plot

Richard Farrington is the hellish son of an English nobleman and his American wife, and his parents send him to visit his aunt and uncle in Long Island, New York. On the ocean voyage from England, Richard meets Betty Winthrop, the beautiful ward of the wealthy Van Allen family, after rescuing her cat, but in introducing her he accidentally gives her a card from John Smithers, a con man who has cheated him at cards in London. He follows Betty to the Van Allen estate, where he overhears her declaring that she would rather marry an American criminal than a weak English aristocrat. Determined to win her over, he poses as Smithers, but things do not go exactly as he had planned.
