Two movies for the price of one. One about Damon and his family, one about his black neighbors who get into trouble from conservative local residents. And those two films don't fit together anywhere. At the end you expect them to be tied up, but nope. Special, and a complete mystery how this got through the editing.

In other words, behind the front door in the suburbs, nothing new can be said about this since American Beauty. But Clooney does try. He has a script of a black comedy (albeit a bit flatter than other scripts by the Coen brothers), the decoration and acting that are also intended to be a bit kitschy and clearly fake, but uses a serious, quiet style that doesn't fit. For example, the film never becomes an exciting thriller, but also nowhere a comedy and as a whole it is a stupefying thing that stumbles with difficulty to the end. And what exactly was meant by this?

In short, Clooney is failing hard as a director. He has all the separate ingredients, but mixes them together without it fitting. Sometimes chocolate with minced meat can become something special, but from a more talented chef. Now all that remains is a tasteless, bland mush. 1.0*.

Clean appearance.

It quickly becomes clear that Suburbicon has to do with the Coen brothers. The thin line between comedy and crime is crossed by a recognizable dose of absurdity. The special characters are also present and the humor is inky black. So George Clooney's latest film does Coenesque. Not surprising when you consider that the duo of filmmakers is partly responsible for the screenplay.

And Clooney cast one of his other friends, Mat Damon, for the lead role of good family man with dual agendas. The film starts quite gruesome when he and his family are victims of a brutal burglary. Something that is at odds with the sweet fifties and bourgeoisie of the suburb where this takes place. When a family of African Americans is also discriminated against by the local residents, the clean appearance is complete.

Everything is told fairly smoothly and contains a small nod to the film noir genre. Undoubtedly an input from the famous film brothers, who never hide their love for classics. The intro is also nice, but after a good start you want something more as a viewer. It's like Clooney is a Coen-light in the director's chair. The film gets stuck in the middle too much. Where does the director actually want to go?

The whole racism-plot now seems superfluous and also in terms of humor they should have gone a bit more over the line. Fortunately, halfway through Oscar Isaac shows up as a curious insurance agent, because with his brief role he manages to give the film a positive twist and make the humor a bit more tangible. Neither meat nor fish may be the final conclusion, but the film is nevertheless entertaining enough to give it a chance. Next time let the masters themselves take the helm.

The black "threat" seems to instigate evil in this idyllic village, but appearances can be deceiving when you speak of the Lodge family. The atmosphere of that time, the characters are really great. The story is minimal but not disturbing in itself. I did have fun with this video.
