Joe Keery is very engaging as Kurt Kunkle, a young man who has been vlogging frequently for 10 years but rarely has more than 10 viewers. He's about to call it quits until he gets a brilliant idea. He registers as a driver with Spree, a taxi app, and installs a number of cameras in his car. He uses his customers as unsuspecting protagonists in 'The Lesson', but they don't appear to be too happy about that. Logical, because Kurt has a special 'final destination' in mind for his passengers. Vloggers' obsession with viewership, comments and likes drives this story and the basic idea is quite interesting. Unfortunately, director and co-screenwriter Kotlyarenko plays his trump card far too early and then he loses track. The result is an increasingly bloody repetition of moves, which makes the second half a bit annoying.

Fortunately, director Kotlyarenko knows well what he is doing for his found footage film about an attention-hungry wannabe influencer. In terms of credibility, the film is all over the place, but the technology and the world feel as if they are correct. His film is full of internet and television personalities, but the big star is leading man Joe Keery. Keery plays Kurt, a vlogger who films rides in his taxi and has a painful surprise in store for his passengers. And not painful in the category of Carpool Karaoke by James Cordon, Kurt is not that sadistic. Keery strikes an excellent balance between annoying and yet endearing. In terms of horror, the film is very tame, but Kotlyarenko is much more interested in satire. Although it is often very obvious, Keery's energy is very contagious.

3.5 stars.

While other people in the land of social media easily manage to score hundreds of thousands of followers, likes and comments with their actions, Kurt scrabbles along ingloriously in the far corners of the realm of influencers. Kurt wants popularity and drastically changes course. He wallpapers his taxi with cameras and starts killing his passengers. The great success has not yet been achieved. Kurt determines that simply killing passengers is not enough to gain viewers and likes. It must be bolder, more varied and faster.

Spree is a satire. The hunt for clix is exaggerated and ridiculed. And that's done in a sarcastic tone that's quite funny. Kurt's actions become more and more brutal and insane. Because the film has a funny undertone, all the brutality that Kurt displays does not seem very disturbing. It's fun to follow Kurt on his crazy murder spree. A possible message from director and writer Eugene Kotlyarenko could be that everyone is crazy and that a socially healthy world is a utopia. He's probably right. Oh well, it doesn't matter much. As long as you know that you are not like that.

Spree actually has very little to it. Too light-hearted to be disturbing. Too light-hearted to be very shocking. Too light-hearted to take seriously. I don't think anyone is impressed by anything shown and portrayed in the film. Spree is nothing more than an entertaining account of an ego trip. Quite fun. There is nothing more that can be done.
