A kind of classic 19th century sex comedy in which lovers, ex-lovers and aspiring lovers look at and analyze love from all sides without actually getting to the heart of it until they surrender to it under the influence of the wine poured by the old Mrs. Armfeldt - and once they do they seem to have almost forgotten what they were researching again. Beneath all the comical entanglements, cynical monologues and desperate sighs lie small insights that you may or may not pick up and/or even follow, but Bergman leaves you completely free. As usual, sublime acting and beautifully photographed. The highlight for me is the moment when in the midst of all the lightheartedness (played or not) suddenly a mask falls when Anne and Charlotte try to outdo each other with confessions about each other's husband's infidelity - and then the latter suddenly ignites in an extremely serious and by its intensity rather disturbing diatribe about the disgustingness of the opposite sex.

A somewhat different Bergman than what I would associate with the rest of his oeuvre. One that also appealed to me a little less, although I certainly found it charming at times. Visually strong anyway as always with beautiful pictures.

Free love and fluttering back and forth with a humorous layer. In terms of free morals, it could count in the 1950s. Light-hearted and entertaining and not as heavy as many of his other films. Pretty nice to see.

A somewhat atypical film by Ingmar Bergman. Much lighter than what you are used to from his better-known titles. However, Bergman was not exactly feeling well at that moment. Very emaciated and somewhat depressed. The film must have been somewhat therapeutic. And partly autobiographical perhaps? Given his broken relationship with Harriet Andersson and early love for Bibi Andersson (both of whom can be seen in the film).

It is a very accessible film and for those who sometimes find Bergman's work too heavy, this seems a better option. On the other hand, it therefore lacks the necessary creativity and the typical stamp of Bergman that just made him a well-known director.
