"Woody Allen takes a nostalgic look at the future."

When Miles Monroe (Allen) cryogenically frozen by a hospital accident wakes up after 200 years, he discovers that the future is less bright than expected. All women are frigid, all men are impotent and the world is ruled by an evil dictator. Miles is chased by the secret police and recruited by rebels who oppose the establishment. Meanwhile, he also falls in love with the beautiful poet Luna (Keaton).

As a genre lover you simply cannot ignore the classics. Sleeper was by no means a punishment to watch, but for a review I'll thank you soon. In fact, I think this was my first Woody Allen movie. As far as totalitarian futuristic visions are concerned, Allen paints a very simple picture here. Somehow quite logical since it is more of a comedy. It never really gets humorous, although in the beginning I could smile at all the statements that completely reverse typical modern things, such as suggesting that vegetables are bad for you, but cakes and fried things are not.

Although the film does have its moments, I can't help but add old-fashioned slapstick to this happening. Slapstick can be quite fun in the right context, but this feels like serving up an apple pie with gorgonzola. When that horrible, happy music appeared again, I had the inclination to fast forward. It just doesn't bother me. I can't really laugh anymore about bazookas that keep firing in the wrong direction. Moreover, it is too easy a way of parodying. I haven't seen anything new here, except for the misplaced combination of science fiction and slapstick.

Even on a second viewing, it remains a pleasant movie from Woody in his early years, very bland and a bit dated here and there, but that still shouldn't spoil the fun.

The ending is a bit dull, which is a shame.. but because I still liked the first hour, my vote remains at a 3.5.
