Slacker plot
A number of young people, completely unable to adapt to modern life, wander aimlessly from here to there in Austin, Texas. They have no work, no life and no desire to do anything, so they prefer to spend their time lounging around and having endless discussions.

It is nice to see how Linklater is already laying the foundation for the Before trilogy here with certain elements. I wasn't blown away by this, but it is at least very creative and original and is quite watchable, even though you do have to stay sharp, because if you miss the monologues, the whole film will pass you by.

A good film set during a regular day in Austin. Various people take turns naturally with fairly long sustained shots (giving the film a pleasant pace). Dialogue-driven, with conversations covering all sorts of topics but often with a philosophical slant. Richard Linklater himself appears in the film's opening as the man in the taxi.

Richard Linklater has already provided me with quite a bit of movie enjoyment, but with this Slacker, I really had to grit my teeth at times to get through the film.
The transitions between the various characters we follow are handled smoothly. We follow a specific person who crosses paths with someone else, after which the film continues with the new character. However, I’d had enough after about half an hour. Most of the conversations never become engaging, and none of the characters manage to add anything extra to the film. We mainly follow oddballs who apparently just hang around unemployed all day.
No, this wasn't it. Linklater does manage to create a nice atmosphere in the film, but none of it sticks. Only the scene at the beginning of the film where a woman is lying in the middle of the street and none of the bystanders really come to her aid (except for a man picking up her groceries), was a fun, absurd moment.
