Sideways plot

"In search of wine. In search of women. In search of themselves."

Miles is an English teacher, a failed writer and quite depressed since his divorce two years ago. His college friend Jack is a soap actor about to get married. A week before the wedding, the two forty-somethings go on a wine tour of California's Santa Ynez Valley. Jack's goal is to get into bed with a woman at least once this week, while you still can. He believes this would also benefit Miles.

Still my favorite movie after all these years. Such a typical film that packs grand themes into a small story about two men with whom everyone can identify, or at least know such a figure. Delicate matters wrapped in a catchy road movie, it doesn't get any better than this for me. My full review can be found here: Review: Sideways – Popcorn Tales - popcorntales.com

“What's the title?”

“The Day After Yesterday.”

“Oh... You mean today?”

Delicious. Sideways is a film to dream away and to drink a good glass of wine (not Merlot), but it is also a very interesting character study. Especially because Miles and Jack are so recognizable, and I think everyone knows such types. Miles is the doubter, the cynical 'glass half empty' type who sees the negative in everything. Jack is all bravado, and is a man who has probably known few setbacks in his life. He dives into every situation without thinking about the consequences.

Yet you see that as the film does change. Miles grows a little more confident, and Jack finds himself hard-hitting. But Sideways is certainly not heavy, because there is also a lot to laugh about and Alexander Payne's intelligent script is full of funny and venomous dialogue, and sharp and striking observations. With fantastic acting from Giamatti, Haden Church, Madsen and Sandra Oh. The wine flows freely, and this is also a feast for a wine lover. I could write pages full about films like Sideways, and it is a film where you discover something new with every viewing.
