A glimpse into the hippie world of the 1960s.

Those who appreciate the music will still find it useful, because the plot has little to offer.

Jack Nicholson, almost 50 years ago, delivered a dynamic performance. Susan Strasberg, on the other hand, had a sweet face but otherwise wasn't very good.

The lip-reading is presented very unrealistically, so this and other imprecisions make the film a weak show.

A deaf girl is searching for her brother in hip San Francisco in 1968, and is helped by three boys she happens to meet. A true hippie film from the hippie era, and in that sense a nice period piece that probably gives a somewhat good impression of what life was like in some circles at the time. But as a film, it's not much to write home about. A lackluster story that jumps around in all directions and very mediocre acting, even from the young Jack Nicholson. It was fun to watch, though. I especially laughed at how ridiculous he was playing guitar. He's clearly not a guitarist. Furthermore, it was a film with a lot of love and drugs, and a lot of psychedelic nonsense. During the drug scenes, everything was done to convey what you experience. But during the film's only sex scene, there was nothing to see. Apparently, that's part of the era. And another thing that struck me in the film, something I'd never really realized, was that hippies at that time were very much turned away from bourgeois society, but they weren't turning away from their faith. Something you could have let go of immediately if you wanted to do what you felt like doing and not be limited in living your own life without interference from others.

Jack Nicholson is probably the main reason to see this film. Here, he walks around with a ponytail as the leader of a hippie band that travels in a psychedelic-painted Volkswagen van. You quickly forget about Nicholson as the main event—even though he's the lead—and are sucked into the time capsule that is Psych-Out. You're completely immersed in the vibe of San Francisco '68. Turn on, tune in, drop out. Heavy trip, man… The plot isn't much, but that's fine because the focus is on the colorful scene and kaleidoscopic imagery. There are some real POVs, good and bad trips, along with dialogue in hippie style. And then there's the fantastic soundtrack provided by Strawberry Alarm Clock and The Seeds, whom some of us know from the legendary Nuggest compilations. For those who weren't around in the '60s—I wasn't even born yet—these kinds of films are a good way to get a feel for the vibe of what was the height of the counterculture of the time. If that doesn't interest you, you better watch something else.
