I also expected it to be a bit worse. I heard a lot of negative reactions about this film, but in the end it is not really inferior to the standard live-action Disney film.

I've seen better Travolta and Williams, but I think both played their part with great pleasure. At least, that's what they know how to convey. It's always a surprise to me if I can laugh at Williams in a movie, or if I'm annoyed by him. Fortunately, I couldn't be bothered by him here. I never saw Matt Dillon in a funny role after There's Something about Mary, and he came out pretty redundant here too.

You could consider the humor as bland, but I think it is also clearly aimed at a younger audience. So I can't really call it funny from my own experience. Nevertheless, I think the film also manages to entertain the older viewer. In any case, I had no qualms about watching the film. What is disturbing, are some thick American clichés that pass by, but of course you can't ignore that with a story and genre like this. How else should one do it?

Old Dogs is a nice family film in almost every way, but that's about it.

2.5*

With Williams' death I could have watched so many better movies tonight to honor him, but the fact is, unfortunately this was the only Williams movie I had on hand (and filmed from TV too...). To be fair, Old Dogs is somehow a terrible film that makes it look like it was shot with a hefty dose of ADHD (very strange editing of scenes, in fact) and a cast that is laughing gas most of the time. And yet it all went well. Williams has a good dose of charisma that makes him very likeable even in more mediocre films, while Travolta in all his irritatingness ended up being quite sympathetic.

A few times I did have a good laugh, although that was mainly from the middle part where they clearly had found their way. Other than that, it all follows the familiar paths, but nowhere in a way that I could get angry about it. In any case, the cast, the fast pace and some of the jokes made me really enjoy it.

John Travolta and Robin Williams, 2 versatile actors in a dramedy, it could deliver a topper, I can say right away that it didn't. The movie starts off well. Travolta and Williams have some nice sharp and funny dialogues in the first minutes, but from the moment the children come into play the film turns into a glorified children's film. The film does have some moments but there is too much junk in it to keep the level constant. It is actually the more emotional moments that emerge in this film, such as the glorified tea party between King Williams and daughter Princess. It are those moments that cannot be extended in terms of level and therefore the balance is quite off in this film. On the other hand, I thought the Williams-Travolta duo was successful and so much more could have been achieved with better material available.

Old Dogs is not top notch. But Travolta and Williams are a nice duo and the film does have some moments, just too few to be able to speak of a really successful film
