André, 19 years old, lives in Porto Alegre in Brazil and works as a copier clerk. In the evening he spies Silvia with binoculars and slowly falls in love with her. One day he decides to follow her to work. There he looks for a way to get in touch with her.

A film with a huge contrast between the first and second parts. The first part starts off fresh and quite original, but I felt that approach went on just a little too long, causing it to lose its effectiveness in the long run. Then comes the second part, very different in style, with more action and a faster pace. The result is a charming, original, and cheerful film with a likeable cast. 3.5*

It is funny how André looks around from his impoverished position and brews opinions, fantasies, comments, and especially sighs about anything and everything. It is served to the viewer via a voice-over that strikes a perfect intonation, depending on the nature of the subject.
These are, alongside a few genuinely successful comedic situations, the strong points of this film, which nevertheless also highlights a socio-cultural aspect of how quickly one can move from poverty and insignificance to crime.
Enjoyable, with another surprising confession at the end, and it is no wonder that this became a top film in Brazil.

The first part of the film was exactly what I had expected from it, and it turned out very well. A lot of time is taken to introduce André's life and his obsession with Silvia, but the fresh style with André's voice-over works well. From the moment André dares to take the step towards Silvia, we are presented with a very sweet and clumsy romantic film that is very pleasant to watch.
Halfway through, the film takes a turn towards a crime comedy. Something I didn't see coming at all and which I also don't think fits entirely in this film. The film then relies on quite a few coincidences and implausibilities with André robbing a bank and then winning the lottery jackpot. The fact that Silvia goes along with his lies and crimes so easily doesn't really fit her charming character. The fact that she, along with André, Cardoso, and Marinês, murders her so-called father with a homemade bomb was a real letdown. Although there are some fun moments amidst all those coincidences and implausibilities, such as the scene where André and Cardoso are searching for loose change in the big bag of cash on the bus.
Because the film takes a different direction halfway through, it feels like we are getting two films for the price of one, and it doesn't feel entirely successful. Although I certainly wasn't bored with this Brazilian movie.
