After her father's sudden death, Crown Princess Victoria becomes Queen of England. Against her family's wishes, she pushes her own views at court and finds an ally in Lord Melbourne. As Victoria's birthday approaches, European aristocratic homes will introduce their suitors to her. But Victoria thinks herself too young for marriage and one day before the party she secretly leaves the palace to go to Paris. Bad weather forces her to spend the night in Dover. There, the incognito traveling queen meets a young man who introduces himself as a German student. In reality, he is Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, who was sent by his family to London to meet Victoria.
