Ugh.

With that liar-lawyer joke at the beginning, you've already got the best of it and that wasn't something to write home about either. Can take Carrey well, but if he can only swallow a whole movie, the fun wears off quickly.

The idea is nevertheless quite funny and could produce some nice scenes, unfortunately Shadyac does everything to make it a corny children's film. Brave jokes, a childish Carrey, some silly family and even the music that regularly sounds fairytale.

I especially like the scenes in court, but also, for example, the roast. Now credibility may not be the highest good in these kinds of movies, but some scenes require normal characters to be so damn stupid (that judge) that it just annoys. Anything but fun or funny.

Carrey has a few rare moments and I could still appreciate the far-reaching silliness of the scene with the plane, but otherwise I could hardly sit out.

1.0*

“I wish, for just one day, Dad couldn't tell a lie.”

The better crazy cymbal work by Jim Carrey. Liar Liar is certainly not a perfect film, but Carrey always knows how to make something of it. And here he can go wild as Fletcher Reede, a lawyer who can't lie for 24 hours because of a wish from his son. Quite a problem for a lawyer.

This results in a number of comical situations, which are fully exploited by Carrey. The storyline with his ex-wife and son provides enough sentimental and sugary situations, but the film never goes over the edge. It's all very thick on top and of course Fletcher repents, but you know that in these kinds of movies. Great entertainment.

Pretty typical story of a father who works too much and neglects his family, but whom we nevertheless have to find sympathetic. Could have been a movie with Robin Williams. Tom Shadyac also worked with Williams in Patch Adams and you can already see in this film that he wants to go a lot in the sentimental, dramatic direction. A few years earlier Shadyac made fun of Carrey in Ace Ventura, in Liar Liar we regularly have to feel the drama. Especially the music is invariably turned on very thick, so that we find Carrey - and especially his son - very pathetic. In between, Carrey pulls one crazy face after another. And those crazy faces work the least here, Liar Liar is clearly not Ace Ventura or The Mask, where the craziness of the comedian with an elastic face really comes into its own.

In a review, in Liar Liar, Cary Elwes is actually the wittiest. He plays such a wonderfully sympathetic sulk, who cannot beat Carrey in terms of popularity. He is a boring asshole, but is never portrayed unsympathetic. Still, we seem to have to cheer for Carrey, who can't lie for a day. This results in witty moments in court, where the film is largely set. But it remains strange that everyone - including Carrey himself - is surprised when our main character finally admits that he loves his son. That is not presented in the film as obvious, but as a big eye-opener and the conclusion of the film. Furthermore, Liar Liar is a nice and sympathetic comedy, which unfortunately leans a bit too much on sweet drama. On the other hand, the physical comedy Carrey goes pretty well, seeing him struggle with a pen remains a funny spectacle.

3 stars.
