I saw this movie when I was a kid in the cinema and I still have fond memories of it. Now many years later I have seen the film again and I still like it very much. Probably even the best of the Louis de Funes movies. Such a typical farce and of course also completely unbelievable. But the story builds up very nicely and is full of fun scenes and jokes. A special outlier in its genre.

Such an old comedy is sometimes dismissed as simple humor, but it is actually very cleverly put together. There are visual jokes where humans compete against machines and automation, especially in the gumball factory. Pulling the jaw is motivated, like when he's trying to signal to the police. Louis "the Funniest" throws his usual tantrums, imitating a woodpecker, alluding to his name Pivert (green woodpecker). His behavior is often illogical, eg when he holds an umbrella in that pond, as if that will help. The delayed reaction is also a well-known technique, when he nods politely at a villain, only to realize a few seconds later that he is in danger. The whole thing revolves around a mistaken identity, in which he sometimes betrays himself in a clumsy way, by making a sign of the cross or by saying Sunday instead of Sabbath.

Anti-Semitism is a delicate subject for a comedy. Pivert makes stigmatizing remarks about Jews, but also about Belgians and other nationalities. Towards the end, he comes to an understanding and becomes more broad-minded. It contains Yiddish words like mesjogge and shtreimel (fur hat). Colonel Farès may have been inspired by Colonel Qadhafi. The fast tempo, the total surrender of De Funès to his role and the mixture of seriousness and madness make this one of the better comedies of the 1970s.

Laugh. Especially the first hour with that chewing gum factory I saw De Funès at his best. When the whole circus starts with the Jews, it all got a bit less and then ended in an absurd way. There is a lot of action in it that makes this a very lively and nervous comedy.

A petty industrialist becomes involved in a political conspiracy and at one point disguises himself as a rabbi to escape his assailants. After that, he has to supervise various Jewish rituals in the community. And more could be obtained from the latter. But De Funès remains a unique comedian... after him only Rowan Atkinson came close. Not a favorite for me : I withhold the high marks for De Funès for Le Corniaud, La Grande Vadrouille and Le Grand Restaurant.
