La Fiebre del Loco plot
Once a year it is allowed to fish for the rare loco (abalone), a shellfish for which a lot of money is paid, especially in Japanese restaurants because of its alleged aphrodisiac powers. The annual fishing party attracts fishermen and merchants from the wider area and causes a real 'loco fever'. Like true mermaids, the precious seafood completely enchants the men of the village, somewhat aided by the presence of a group of prostitutes, who have also come to the village because of the good business prospects. The peso signs in the villagers' eyes put a strain on old bonds of love and trust. The local priest, who also serves as mayor, DJ and radio soap actor, tries to keep the community together with an unconventional mix of entertainment, capitalism and religion, but has formidable opponents on the sexy shells.
