La Belle Époque plot

"If you could live your own life again, would you do it?"

Disillusioned in his sixties, Victor sees his life turned upside down the day Antoine, a brilliant entrepreneur, offers him a new kind of attraction. This first film for me in 2020 is a surprisingly good one: I often find French films disappointing, especially the comic ones, but this is just a very beautiful and intelligent film where the humor is not so much funny or hilarious as in American comedies, but witty as in spirit so that the film always brings out a happy smile.

The film is busy and a bit confusing - so you have to keep your wits about you - but interesting throughout, commenting on both the eternal theme of love and the transience of today's society with its gadgets and 'experience' culture. The busy and confusing is also functional: we also lead a busy, hectic life in which we are always chasing new experiences or progress (life should not be boring) and the film does not turn out to be a nostalgic trip like Midnight in Paris (2011) to be as you might expect (at most, Woody Allen's film is parodied), but more like 'postmodern' films such as The Truman Show (1998) in which one gets caught up in what is real and what is not real, what is spontaneous and what is staged.

The message of the film, I think, is something like that we want innovation or progress all the time, but we have to cherish what we have in love, where at the same time love often rests on nostalgia and we chase happiness in vain in what is not real. That may be a bit cliché for a romantic movie, but as we learn, love doesn't need novelty either. This movie is a jewel and will end up high in my 2020 final list.

Beautiful French comedy that made us enjoy the humor that is typical of the Frenchman.

The first half hour was a bit messy in terms of elaboration but otherwise .... OK!

Victor Drumond (Daniel Auteui) is evicted from their apartment by his wife Marianne (Fanny Ardant) and then comes into contact with a company that offers the opportunity to relive a day in his life, through actors and a setting that has been adapted. is according to the wishes of the customer.

It is a pity that Pathé moved the film to the art houses, because the film deserves a larger audience.

A 7.5.

The French take on The Game - without the overarching intrigue of whether or not it's a game, but instead full of subcutaneous suspense. Perfectly played by Auteuil, with a cast around him that gives him just enough counterweight, although in the end it is mainly about him. Cliche on cliche, but done so charmingly that it actually adds something rather than irritates, although you may have to have something with French cinema to think about it that way - but then it's also a real party.
