"A film where women eat men and men eat ham"
When a Spaniard really likes something, he says 'jamón jamón'. And an attractive, seductive woman is called 'Una mujer jamóna'. Such a woman is young Sylvia. She has an affair with José Luis, becomes pregnant and wants to marry him. He wants that too, but there is a problem. José Luis is the son of the wealthy Conchita and Manuel who have made a fortune with an underpants factory where Sylvia works in the studio. And Sylvia is the daughter of Carmen, a warm single mother with two daughters and also a local prostitute.

Was released (in Belgium anyway) by 'Quality Film Collection', and I don't think Jamón Jamón really belongs there. It's just a little too light and airy for that.
But it is a nice film, where the drama is not exactly present to a great extent - for that it is all just a bit over the top, just about everyone with everyone - but true 'comedy' takes center stage.
The subcutaneous humor is constantly present: the macho is taken off his pedestal, and in fact the joke is made with 'the soap'.
With some of the characters, some images and events, and with the eroticism involved, I even had a bit of a film noir feeling at times.
Great acting!
Nice seat - except that I was sometimes annoyed by what happened in some scenes with animals.

Good film in which a young couple wants to get married, but the boy's mother thinks otherwise. A simple plot with really only amorous developments (everyone does it with everybody). The film has enough beautiful scenes, especially because it is all just a bit quirky. Also nice to see a young Penélope Cruz and Javier Bardem here.

A real Spanish movie. I read from reviews on the internet that the film does better with Spaniards, because they understand the symbolism better. I'm not Spaniard, but the film was atmospheric. About lust and love, about status and relationships. In which the weakness for the flesh (partly also literally portrayed) takes the upper hand. It never gets big, but it remains fascinating with beautiful music and the necessary tragedy.
Penélope Cruz was apparently only 17 years old when shooting. Different times though... At that time no couple with her future husband Javier Bardem, but the chemistry works. Cruz and Bardem's liveliness lift the film slightly. According to her, she did not regret those nude scenes in themselves, but was a bit afraid that it would dominate her career that had just started. Fortunately, her acting was also appreciated and she deservedly received a nomination at the Goya Awards for the role in this film.
