Brian Weathersby, 28, works as a salesman in a specialty bedding store. He is an afterthought. His two older brothers are successful as businessman and surgeon. Brian has yet to find his place in the world. His job does not satisfy him. Brian spends most of the day pursuing his dream of adopting a Chinese baby. When the attractive Happy walks into the shop one day and falls asleep on a bed, he falls in love instantly. But to win her over, he must face her father, Al Lolly, a rowdy art collector with a bad back and a lot of money.

Fans of the lovely Zooey Deschanel shouldn't miss this film. Others will get little enjoyment out of it. In my opinion, the script ended up in the trash on the very first day of shooting, and a lot of improvisation took place. It was, however, a pleasant reunion with Ed Asner and Jane Alexander (a tiny role).

A mediocre film about a bed salesman who wants to adopt a Chinese baby and subsequently runs into a nice girl in the shop. The individual scenes are fun to watch and reasonably funny, but as a whole, this quirky rom-com with strange characters is a bit disappointing. The cast, on the other hand, does not disappoint, but they cannot save this film.

Gigantic is a small film. A romantic comedy with a storyline that isn't particularly remarkable. A young man who falls in love with a girl and encounters some struggles along the way. That sounds like a run-of-the-mill romantic comedy. However, the film has more to offer than the unremarkable-sounding storyline implies.
Gigantic is not a kitschy film. The film aligns more closely with reality than the average romantic comedy. The film is more open and relaxed. Gigantic focuses more on the characters than on events. The characters are both interesting and eccentric. No one plays a stereotypical role. Almost every character deviates from societal norms. This applies to the lead roles of Paul Dano and Zooey Deschanel, as well as the supporting roles played by John Goodman and Zach Galifianakis, among others.
Gigantic is something of an oddity in the world of romantic comedies. The further you get into the film, the less romance plays a role and the more tragedy creeps in. I would therefore not want to label Gigantic as a cheerful and carefree comedy. There are certainly moments in the film that tickle the funny bone, but there are many more moments focused on the drama surrounding the characters. Sometimes the drama is accompanied by humor. However, far from always.
Afterwards, I conclude that I watched a solid film with fine, eccentric characters, each struggling with their own desires, problems, and limitations. The various struggles are not explored or delved into very deeply, resulting in minimal dramatic impact. The impact goes just far enough to make you feel involved during the film, but not far enough to require much thought afterwards.
