A while ago I bought a bunch of Don Camillo DVDs for my parents, and yesterday it was their turn. For my parents, a lot of nostalgia from the time they grew up. For me too, as a child I devoured the books and I also saw some films.

In any case, I have seen this before as a child, I remembered a number of scenes, for example the scene in which his clothes are stolen. Nice to see it again, and the image quality was 100% better than expected. Just a solid shot, which surprised me. I did complain about the poor quality of another Don Camillo film.

In terms of content I liked it a little less. I still prefer it when Don Camillo and Peppone are evenly matched, but here it ended in a resounding 4-1 victory for the former. This movie was also a bit on the long side. Nevertheless, not bad. 2.5*.

Nice reunion with Don Camillo and even though he is already the fourth in line, it remains amusing to follow the tributes of this pastor, pardon, monseigneur, and his opponent Peppone, now senator. Funny dialogues and situations, petty bourgeois, and based on the contradictions between clergy and communism. What a farce when Don Camillo takes the clapper out of the bell of the Peppone supporters. The conversations with the Christ image remain "divine". What is also positive about these videos is the heart-warming fact that when push comes to shove, people prevail over petty, extreme opinions. And of course there is also and above all the brilliant, unsurpassable person of Fernandel.

The hatred and love between Don Camillo and Peppone is certainly not lacking in this fourth part of the series of film adaptations of the short stories by Giovannino Guareschi. And although the title role emphatically states that these are free adaptations, the friendly atmosphere and anecdotal character of those stories remain beautifully intact.

Oh, how homesick our promoted bishop and senator are - not only for their village, but also for each other and each other's pranks and rivalries. The story is beautifully embedded in the era of relative relaxation between East and West. It's funny that the outward resemblance between Peppone and Stalin (which was of course no coincidence from the start) is so emphasized in this film with large portraits of the dictator, while the Detente became possible after Khrushchev's de-Stalinization...

Nine years after The Little World of Don Camillo, Fernandel in particular looks a lot older, with his graying hair. Fortunately, it does not detract from the freshness of another delicious gem.
