Don Camillo plot

The first film of the famous Don Camillo saga. In Brescello, a small village in the high plateau of Po, Italy, the 'red' won a landslide victory in the elections and Peppone was elected mayor. The pastor Don Camillo, colorful and impulsive, resists him by all means possible. He rings the bells to disrupt the victor's speech, and refuses to baptize Peppone's son in the name of Lenin... But by the advice of God, to whom he speaks directly, he must make overtures to Peppone and make a contribution to the municipal treasury. Opponents and accomplices, Don Camillo and Peppone provoke riots and craziness. But one day the city council decides to ban Don Camillo. But how will the village react?

The film, based on the book of the same name (Il Piccolo Mondo Di Don Camillo) by Giovanni Guareschi, is set around 1951 in Brescello, a small Italian provincial town in the Reggio Emilia, between Milan and Bologna. Fernandel and Gino Cervi are to die for and the rest of the cast is just as delicious. In addition, there is a delightful script from director Julien Duvivier. This is pure enjoyment. A real must for every cinephile... 5*

Despite its advanced age, it is still a delightful satire about post-war Italy, where the Catholic Church had to give up part of its traditionally dominant position at a local level to communists, who were less straightforward than they themselves thought.

A collection of delightful sketches with great leading roles by Fernandel and Gino Cervi. I've seen this movie many times before. In my eyes it remains an indestructible oldtimer.

This movie is a classic, and upon reflection even older than I thought. 1952! I expected a somewhat dusty film, but I actually think it still comes across as quite fresh. Of course it takes place in a bygone era, but the humor and attitudes are good. There is certainly something timeless about the conversations between Fernando and Jesus. It is also a film that does convey a political image of the time, with the discord between communists and Catholics. Pleasant viewing.
