Giuseppe Di Noi (Alberto Sordi), an Italian engineer who has lived in Sweden for the last seven years, returns to his native country during his vacation with his Swedish wife and children. At the border, however, he is arrested and imprisoned for no apparent reason. This is followed by the necessary legal wrangling, while Giuseppe is meanwhile taken from prison to prison.
