Cary Grant (high in my Actor Top 10) and Katharine Hepburn (Number 1 in my Actresses) team up with a favorite director on a hugely-reputed comedy from Hollywood's Golden Age... and yet I can only do this not find a nice or funny movie. It starts with the fact that Cary Grant has to be a stiff professor, and how is that made clear to the viewer? Because they put glasses on him. And from that moment on, I don't lose the sense of contrivance and watch the film from a distance instead of being carried away by it. Too bad, because I was all set, and Grant and Hepburn make a hilarious combination in Holiday, not to mention the absolutely masterful The Philadelphia story, the smartest comedy ever made. Bringing up baby, on the other hand, is like an intercity that rolls on successfully – on a different track than the train I'm on.

Wonderful comedy.

Smooth dialogues, fun situations, good pacing and a fantastic chemistry between Grant and Hepburn. Those are the elements that make Bringing Up Baby so good. It never feels forced and the fun just drips from it. Where I'm normally not into the classic comedies, I was totally into it in this film. Most responsible for that is the amazing interaction between Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn. Very busy, those overlapping dialogues, but it works very well. Very nice how both actors are not afraid to embarrass themselves completely. And then there's the complete chaos that Baby creates. Makes for some fun moments. The best scene in the movie is the dinner scene.

Surprisingly fun movie.

Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn showcase their talent as comedians and make a big impression as I haven't seen them perform that way yet. Cary Grant stars in a role as a klutz that you would also see playing a Harry Lloyd. While Katherine Hepburn's eyes sparkle with the naughtiness her role demands. In later films she irritates me at times but here I think she's really great.
A film with clever dialogues that are fired at a fast pace and with conviction by the couple. Real screwball as the pushing and repulsion continues throughout the movie and there is no (sexual) solution/relaxation through a relationship, except for what is suggested at the very end. There is the exciting element of the leopards, but otherwise this is a film that only has a super tight screenplay with ping-pong dialogues. That's how simple - or difficult - film can be. Directing and photography by Howard Hawks and Russell Metty respectively are immaculate. After watching a few Howard Hawks films, what strikes me most is how 'unobtrusive' good he is at his job.

I watched this movie on my laptop during a long train ride. None of the fellow travelers could suspect the wide smile under my mouth mask that could not be burned away during the entire length of the film. And that's enough for my score.
