Those who secretly hope for an equalization of Superbad will come home from a cold fair. Most of the film, Booksmart is forcedly funny, sometimes to the point of being uncomfortable. However, when the girls arrive at the final prom and there is a little more room for melodrama, the comedy is strangely good. So I feel like there could have been more to it.

Very mediocre.

It's not a total copy of Superbad (but from a female point of view), but it's clear that Wilde is targeting that same audience. Where that film is a bit rougher and meaner, Wilde puts a little more heart and drama into it. And if this kind of film can really do without something like a toothache, it is more drama.

It also has something to do with the fact that I didn't like the lead actresses too much. Quite quirky characters that don't really do justice to the core of the plot. They may not be nerdy enough, while the other characters are just a little docile. It also runs very smoothly and in the end everyone is good friends. I like these movies better when they're a bit sharper.

In terms of directing, there is something more to experience than with the average comedy, but Wilde does not impress enough to really stand out. So it has become a somewhat clumsy film, while you notice in everything that the film just doesn't try to be that. Of course this was well received critically, and Wilde does show some potential as a director, but it was not good.

2.0*

I was looking forward to this movie, but it was quite disappointing. What the film cracks is that it especially wants to be fun, with fluent main characters and fun events. But it feels enormously made and therefore does not manage to entertain. I really didn't even laugh once. It's that both ladies are doing really well (they're so much better than the material they get) that the film is yet to be seen. And the music and the occasional camera work are fine. But next time a better, more original and sincere script would do wonders.
