Amedio (Alberto Sordi) works for the telephone company in a remote part of Australia. He is lonely and wants a wife, so he orders a mail order bride. The woman he chooses is the beautiful former prostitute, Carmela (Claudia Cardinale), who wants to retire. The photo he sent to lure her to Australia was not his, but his beautiful friend Giuseppe (Riccardo Garrone).
